Kit Kitchens for Hernando Alderman, Ward 5

Kristoffer (Kit) Kitchens is a dedicated father of four, a devoted husband, and a proud Hernando resident. As a small business owner and real estate broker, Kit has a strong understanding of the local economy and the importance of community attractiveness. His experience as a missionary has also given him a deep appreciation for service and helping others. Kit is running for Alderman of Ward 5 with a commitment to public safety, transparency, fiscal responsibility, and making Hernando an even better place to live, work or play. He is passionate about giving back to his community and being an accessible, accountable leader for all.

KIT’S PRIORITIES FOR WARD 5

  • I am fully committed to securing increased funding for our police, fire and emergency services. Public safety will be a top priority for me, and I will work to ensure that our first responders have the tools they need, including modern equipment and training. As alderman, I will advocate for measures that make Hernando safer for everyone - families, businesses, and visitors.

  • As alderman, I will stand firm against the spread of unsightly units and industrial-style buildings in Ward 5. As a real estate broker and business owner, I understand how these types of developments can lower the attractiveness of an area. That is why, as your Alderman, I will push for zoning reforms that preserve the residential and scenic nature of our neighborhoods in Ward 5, ensuring that new developments enhance, rather than detract from, the quality of life on our side of town.

  • I believe Hernando’s neighborhoods are the heart of our community. I will focus on making them even better by pushing policy that bolsters parks, roads, and public spaces inside of and around our neighborhoods. These improvements will enhance the quality of life for all residents, ensuring our neighborhoods remain vibrant, welcoming, and well-equipped for current and future generations.

  • As a business owner, I am committed to sound fiscal management. My plan includes reducing any city debt through strategic budgeting, limiting any unnecessary borrowing, and ensuring we maintain a conservative debt-to-asset ratio. This will allow us to invest in community projects and economic growth without overburdening taxpayers.

  • Intent:

The Historic Square is a cornerstone of Hernando’s cultural identity, and it’s crucial that it remains both a cultural and economic focal point. While many existing buildings on the Square are suited for small offices or boutique stores, there is limited space for unique dining and larger retail establishments. As some of these buildings near the end of their lifespan, I want to ensure that they are replaced with developments that expand the Square’s charm, rather than modern structures like strip malls or gas stations.

    Plan:

I will propose creating a design overlay for the area surrounding the Square. This overlay will require new developments to reflect the beautiful, architectural style and character of the Square. The goal is to allow for a variety of architectural designs while ensuring new buildings blend seamlessly with the historic charm of the area. Existing structures will be exempt from this overlay.

    Benefits:

    • Preserved Charm: As old buildings are replaced, the area will maintain its historical character, preventing modern designs from detracting from the Square’s unique aesthetic.

    • Attracting Unique Businesses: By offering real estate suited for higher-end dining and retail, Hernando will be able to attract a more diverse range of businesses, moving beyond fast-casual chains and fostering a richer dining and shopping experience.

    • Economic Growth: This plan will generate increased economic output and more tax revenue, which can be reinvested into improving roads, parks, and other vital services—without placing additional tax burdens on our citizens.

  • I believe transparency and communication are the cornerstones of effective leadership. You deserve more than just a visit from politicians every four years. That’s why I commit to keeping you informed on a regular basis—whether it’s monthly or bi-monthly, I’ll share updates on key issues, how I’m voting on the board, and the reasons behind my votes - you’ll always know where I stand and why. As alderman, I will be here to listen, engage, and ensure you’re part of the conversation every step of the way.

I WOULD APPRECIATE YOUR VOTE ON APRIL 1ST

We need principled conservatives who will stand firm for what’s right, not what’s easy or politically correct—at every level of government.
